Pairs Socks

What to make next

Pairs makes one argument. Across the 2,375 pounds Meta is spending right now, 86.5% of it says some version of "these are nice socks made from good fibre": Everyday luxury 42.6%, The fibre 27.3%, Upgrade your drawer 16.6%. Seven of the thirteen claims carry no spend at all, including every one that answers a problem: Warm feet, The fit, Made to last, Gifting. That would be a defensible position if the argument were proven, but 41.9% of live spend has nothing behind it, and the best-performing recipe in the whole year has been switched off for 384 days. The account is not short of ads. It is short of arguments, and it is six weeks from the quarter that takes 43.5% of the year's orders.

Three moves, ordered by what they cost. Revive is proven and switched off, so it costs nothing but a decision. Rebuild is proven, running and tiring, so it is the same recipe on a different scent or product, never a rebuild of the ad itself. New is the only kind that needs a shoot day. Revive and rebuild are read off 365 days of ad-level spend, which averaged 2.36x; ranked on spend, with the return shown beside it and flagged where it came in under that average. What needs deciding

  1. The one objection customers actually raise has never been answered
Every extra softness adjective makes this worse, because the complaint is precisely that the adjective was not true. Show the composition, the knit and the wash. This is the cheapest build on the list and it needs no shoot day.
  2. The best-returning recipe in the account has been off for 384 days
This is underfunded, not failed. Durability also answers finding 1 and speaks to the 87.5% of customers who never come back. Rebuild it, fund it properly, and stop reaching for the sale creative that returns a third less.
  3. Warm feet works, is seasonal, and is switched off three weeks before its season
The seasonal ramp starts in about three weeks and the creative for it does not exist yet. This is the highest-urgency item on the page purely because of the date.

The rest are in where the biggest gaps are, and the evidence for every row above is in what already works.

What already works

Every ad that ran in the last 365 days, down to the top 80.0% of spend, rolled up into RECIPES: who it is for, what it claims, what it does. The recipe is the unit on purpose. When an ad tires you do not rebuild that ad, you rebuild its recipe on a different scent or a different product, and that is a brief a person can act on. 5 of these 57 ads carry judgements from the weekly register, including its vision passes and hand corrections; the other 52 were tagged fresh through the same rules. Ranked on spend. Click a row for the ads inside it.

State is read from the data, not judged. FRESH is running and fed inside 60 days. STALE is running on an asset older than that. OFF has spent nothing in 30 days. SEASONAL is off because every asset in it launched in October, November or December, which is a season and not neglect.

Who we are reaching, and at what stage

Inferred, not recorded. Our ad names have no slot for persona or awareness stage, so these come from what each ad ARGUES, through a stated mapping in the client config with a reason on every rule, sourced to the persona doc. It is the weakest source we have: a tag written at launch would replace it outright. Read it as "this is who this creative is written at", not as who Meta delivered it to.

No creative at all for: Unaware · Problem-aware · Most aware. Coverage is a creative question, never a delivery one: the fix is to make that ad, never to build an audience or an ad set for it.

What has worked, and what has not

Same 365 days, asked the other way round. How often did we make this, and what happened when we did? Two numbers decide it, and both are this account measured against itself. Funding is spend per attempt against the £2,166 the average ad in this account received: Meta deciding, with real money, whether to keep feeding a thing we made. Return is the recipe's ROAS against the account's 2.36x. Fewer than 4 attempts, or less than £297 spent, gets no verdict, because silence is not evidence and four ads sharing £80 can show any return at all. Each band shows its biggest 6; the strip above counts all of them.

Read the bottom two rows of the grid together. ⚠️ Spend per ad is partly a function of which campaign an ad sat in, so a small budget can look like a verdict. Across a hundred attempts that is a pattern. Across four it may be an artefact, which is why four is the floor. The claim could not be read on 3.0% of 365-day spend, mostly sale creative that makes no claim at all and older ads with no body text. Those are excluded from the benchmarks rather than counted as a content type.

What we claim × how we show it

Down the side is what an ad CLAIMS, the one thing it leads on, read from the primary text rather than from the ad name. Across the top is what it DOES, the move it makes on the viewer. Darker is more spend, and the edges carry each row and column total.

This table answers one question: are we making every claim, and are we stuck making it one way? A row that is all in one column is a claim with a single execution behind it. The table below it uses the same rows to ask a different question.

Not running at all: How it feels · Made to last · Value · Warm feet · The fit · Gifting. A whole row empty is a bigger finding than any single empty cell, because the account is not making that argument in any form at all. But over the last 365 days Made to last ran £3,867 at 3.26x, and Value ran £3,729 at 1.54x, and Warm feet ran £12,640 at 2.38x, so those are switched off rather than never tried. A 30-day window cannot tell those two apart, which is why what already works reads twelve months. The genuinely untried ones are How it feels · The fit · Gifting.

What we claim × how we prove it

Same rows, different question: why should she believe it? Across the top is the evidence behind the claim. A customer saying it, the rating, a press clipping, a demonstration, a comparison against what she would otherwise buy, the maker's own word, or a checkable fact the claim carries with it.

The last column is the one to read first. Asserted only means the ad states the claim and offers nothing to support it. It is a real column, not a tagging failure, and on most accounts it is bigger than anyone expects.

How this is read. Proof comes from the creative wherever the creative settles it: if a customer carries the ad it is a testimonial, if the ad IS a review card it is the rating, if it shows the thing happening it is a demonstration. Only where neither the messenger nor the form answers does the copy decide. That means some ads give the same answer to both tables by construction, and those cells are the least interesting ones here. The cells worth reading are where the two tables disagree, for example a claim about the makers carried by a customer rather than by the maker.

Never used as proof: Reviews or rating · Shown working · Against the alternative · The maker says it · Carries its own detail. Worth asking whether that is a decision or an oversight.

What our ads actually do

The move each ad makes on the viewer: talks to them, shows them, teaches them, opens a box in front of them. Not what it argues and not how it looks, just what it does. Tap any i for what a lane counts as and, more usefully, what it does not. Spend-weighted, last 30 days. A lane can hold plenty of budget while every ad in it is months old, so the ageing badge matters as much as the bar.

Nothing at all in: Unboxing, the reveal · Teaching, steps, how-to · Comparison, before & after · Reacting, replying · Skit, humour, a bit · Enumerated, text-led · Person speaking to camera · Shows it working · A story with beats · Not stated. These are not failures, they are untested. An absent lane leaves no trace in the data, which is exactly why the checklist is fixed rather than derived from what is already running.

Where the biggest gaps are

Ranked by what it costs us to leave it open, not by how empty the cell is. The grid above can only see arguments we already make; this is the read on the ones we do not.

1

The one objection customers actually raise has never been answered

objectionproof gapcheapest fix

30% of every low-star review says the sock feels thin, synthetic or cheap, which is the single biggest complaint in a 1,453-review corpus. It is a direct challenge to the brand's whole premise. In the live account, Made to last is 0% of spend, The fit is 0%, and the proof lane Carries its own detail is completely empty: not one ad brings a checkable fact, a fibre percentage, a knit detail or a wash claim.

Evidence. Reviews: 19 of 63 low-star reviews, verbatims include "I thought that they felt very synthetic" and "I don't think it is appropriate to label socks as wool when the proportion...". Live register: 42 ads, 2,375 pounds, zero in Made to last, The fit or Carries-its-own-detail.

So what. Every extra softness adjective makes this worse, because the complaint is precisely that the adjective was not true. Show the composition, the knit and the wash. This is the cheapest build on the list and it needs no shoot day.

2

The best-returning recipe in the account has been off for 384 days

underfunded365-daywhat worked

Made to last is the highest-ROAS claim Pairs has ever run: 3.52x as a showcase and 3.01x as a slice of life, against an account benchmark of 2.36x. Between them they took only 3,867 pounds across three ads, and both recipes have been OFF for 384 days. Meanwhile Value, the worst recipe in the account at 1.54x, was running as recently as 66 days ago and took 3,729 pounds.

Evidence. 365-day recipe table, top 57 ads covering 80% of 148,341 pounds. Benchmark 2,166 pounds per ad at 2.36x across 14 classified recipes.

So what. This is underfunded, not failed. Durability also answers finding 1 and speaks to the 87.5% of customers who never come back. Rebuild it, fund it properly, and stop reaching for the sale creative that returns a third less.

3

Warm feet works, is seasonal, and is switched off three weeks before its season

seasonalurgentQ4

Warm feet took 12,640 pounds over the year at 2.43x and 2.30x, both above the 2.36x benchmark on one of them and level on the other. Both recipes are SEASONAL and last received a new ad 319 and 320 days ago. Today it is 0% of live spend. Bed socks are 23.2% of Pairs' orders across the year and 33.9% of December's, and the bed-sock search cluster is the single biggest job-to-be-done in Google at 1,076 conversions.

Evidence. 365-day recipes; Shopify 31,434 DTC orders; Google 148,422 terms. Alpaca revenue share runs 12.5% in June to 33.0% in November.

So what. The seasonal ramp starts in about three weeks and the creative for it does not exist yet. This is the highest-urgency item on the page purely because of the date.

4

Cold feet is a named medical problem and no ad has ever mentioned it

missing laneproblem-awarepersona gap

55 reviews name cold feet as a condition, with Raynaud's, poor circulation, post-surgical pain and cold-water swimming all appearing unprompted, and a further 27 name diabetes, seams or sensitive feet. These are the most emotionally specific reviews in the corpus. The live account argues fibre quality and everyday luxury. Not one ad, live or in the 365-day top 57, opens on the problem.

Evidence. Review corpus, 1,453 written reviews. "Every year I suffer with freezing feet due to reynauds." "My chiropodist advised me to try woollen, and to avoid a raised toe seam because of my diabetes." Live claim table: Warm feet 0%.

So what. This is the difference between selling a nice sock to someone browsing and selling relief to someone who has been failed by three other pairs. It is also the only route into the problem-aware rung of the ladder, where nothing currently speaks.

5

Press is the best-funded proof in the account and only two ads carry it

proofunderfundedwhat worked

Press is 43.1% of live spend, and all of it is two ads: Ad 446 with a Harper's Bazaar pull quote and five stars, and Ad 473 with Conde Nast Traveller. Ad 446 alone is 993 pounds, 41.8% of everything Meta is spending. Against that, 41.9% of live spend is Asserted only across 38 ads.

Evidence. Live register after the 20 Sept vision pass. Both ads derive as 'asserted only' from copy alone because the masthead lives in the image overlay; both were corrected by hand and the correction is recorded on the ad.

So what. The strongest asset Pairs has is riding on two statics. Recut both mastheads across formats and placements. Also note the fragility: without the hand correction this page would have reported the press column as empty and the account as 85% unproven.

6

Gifting is zero, six weeks from the quarter that is 43.5% of the year

missing laneQ4urgent

Not one live ad, and not one of the 21 distinct body texts running in the account, mentions a gift, a recipient or an occasion. November and December are 13,669 of 31,434 orders. Male share on Meta rises to 13.7% in that window and gift messages run 32.0% Christmas and 18.0% mum.

Evidence. All 21 distinct primary texts read by hand on 20 Sept 2026. Shopify 12-month order data. Note the search evidence cuts the other way: gift-language search is only 28.7 conversions against 1,076 for bed socks.

So what. Gifting is a Q4 creative FRAME, never a keyword strategy and never a separate audience. It needs to exist in the creative by mid October, because November more than doubles October and nothing new should ship during the peak.

7

Nobody is on screen in 82.9% of spend, and a man almost never is

messenger gappersona gapfounder

Messenger is Nobody on screen for 82.9% of live spend and Real customer for 15.0%. There is no founder, no employee, no expert and no creator anywhere in the account. Against that, men are 33.0% of summer Meta purchases and 28.0% at Father's Day, against 6.1% in the New Year, and Google carries 870.7 conversions of men's search demand all year with "bed socks for men" the ninth biggest non-brand term.

Evidence. Live register messenger split; Meta purchases across 8 seasonal windows; Google 12-month search terms.

So what. The male share peaks in SUMMER, not at Father's Day, and summer is when the creative showed men. That is a repeatable creative result being mistaken for a seasonal one. There is also a founder here, Alice Macfarlane, with a genuinely usable origin story that the account has never once used.

8

The social proof is running on an archive that stopped growing 14 months ago

proofoperationalcheapest fix

Every review Pairs has collected since August 2025 is a star rating with an empty body: 535 of them, while volume is actually rising (113 in August 2026, 72 in the first three weeks of September). The last written review in the corpus is July 2025. Two live ads carry customer quotes, and both quotes predate the rebrand.

Evidence. Shopify `review` metaobject, 1,988 rows, 1,453 with text. Month-by-month split in personas/reviews-coverage.json.

So what. This is not a creative job. Check the review-request integration: the request is landing and the written body is not being captured or stored. Until it is fixed, the testimonial lane can only recycle 2021 to 2025 material.

What to build next

Twenty executions across eight cells, capped deliberately low because the account is quiet right now (2,375 pounds in 30 days against 148,341 over the year) and because the Q4 ramp starts in about three weeks. Everything below is expressed as a claim x form cell, so one shoot can close two gaps at once. Priority order is the gap order above, with one exception: the fibre-composition build comes first because it answers the biggest objection, needs no shoot day, and can be made from assets that already exist. Absent lanes get two to four shots, not one: at a roughly 5% winner rate a single ad cannot tell you whether the lane failed or the execution did.

#CellWhat to makeWhy now
1Made to last x carries its own detailP1Show the composition, answer "is it actually wool?"Three statics and one short film. On screen: the actual fibre percentage for merino, alpaca and bamboo, the knit close enough to see the stitch, and the wash instruction. No adjectives at all, and specifically not the word soft. One execution should be a straight side-by-side against a cotton multipack sock after ten washes if the brand will stand behind it.30% of low-star reviews say the sock feels thin or synthetic, and the proof lane Carries its own detail is completely empty. This is the only build on the list that answers a complaint in the customer's own words, and it needs photography rather than a shoot day.
2Warm feet x sceneP2The bed sock at night, before the rampFilm at night, in a real bedroom, not a styled beige set. Feet going into bed cold and the sock going on. Three executions: one wordless, one with a named condition on screen (Raynaud's, poor circulation), one for the person buying it for someone else. Deliver by mid October.Warm feet returned 2.43x over the year and has had no new ad for 319 days, while bed socks are 33.9% of December orders and the biggest search cluster Pairs has. The season starts in three weeks.
3Warm feet x carries its own detailP2Why alpaca is warmer, in fifteen secondsTwo executions. The hollow alpaca fibre, the reason it insulates, and why that matters to someone whose feet are cold at midnight. The site already claims hypoallergenic and temperature-regulating in one sentence each and has never explained either.Education is the missing rung: the ladder is well served at solution-aware and empty at problem-aware. It also double-counts against gap 1 by putting a checkable fact behind a claim.
4Gifting x showcaseP3The set as the gift, finished by mid OctoberThree executions built on the collections that already exist at 24 to 45 pounds. The box opened, the socks as a gift someone is pleased to receive, and one execution that solves the 50-pound free-shipping threshold from a 46-pound AOV. Do not write novelty Christmas copy: a customer specifically praised Pairs for having "no Santas, no robins, no gimmicks".Q4 is 43.5% of the year's orders and gifting is 0% of the creative. November more than doubles October, so this has to be finished before the ramp, not during it.
5Who it's for x sceneP4A man, wearing them, all yearTwo executions with men in them, shot so they can run outside a Father's Day window. Boot and welly, and the bed sock for men. Plain styling, no fashion register. Use the fibre argument unchanged, because his own search terms are already fibre terms.Male share hits 33.0% in summer when the creative shows men and falls to 6.1% when it does not. Google carries 870.7 conversions of men's demand all year and "bed socks for men" is the ninth biggest non-brand term, against zero men's creative.
6The fit x shown workingP1It stays up, it does not dig, it is the length we saidTwo short films. A day of wear with no pulling the sock up, and the top of the sock leaving no mark. State the actual length next to a shoe. Nothing staged; this has to look like evidence. The fit is 0% of spend, yet slipping down, rucking and wrong length are 8% of low-star reviews and one reviewer was told Pairs "didn't make calf length socks" after buying a sock described as calf length.
7Everyday luxury x pressP1Spread the mastheads past two staticsTwo executions recutting the Harper's Bazaar and Conde Nast Traveller lines into the formats the account does not have them in, especially anything that can run as a Story. Keep the quote as the hero, not the sock.Press is 43.1% of live spend carried by two ads, one of which is 41.8% of everything Meta is spending. The best proof in the account is a single point of failure.
8Made to last x a customer says itP5Three pairs, ten days, one washTwo executions built on the wash argument, which only 20 reviews mention and which is concrete and unusual: "I could just take 3 pairs for ten days without having to worry about washing them." Pair it with the restock moment at around 37 days.It sits on the highest-ROAS claim in the account and speaks to the 87.5% who never come back. It also gives the testimonial lane something to say that is not another softness adjective.
